Spanish Gambling Revenue Increases 55.1% Year-on-Year to €312.6m in Q2

In the second quarter of 2023, Spain saw a substantial 55.1% surge in gross gambling revenue, reaching €312.6 million (£207.0 million/$332.6 million) compared to the previous year. The revenue from sports betting more than doubled. The total revenue for this quarter comfortably outperformed last year and was also 2.5% higher than the €313.3 million recorded in Q1. These figures have been released by Spain’s gambling regulatory body, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

The highest Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR) in Q2 was generated by casinos totaling €149.9 million, marking a 27.9% increase from the previous year and a 4.5% rise from Q1.

Slot machine revenue experienced a notable 29.9% year-on-year increase, while live roulette GGR saw an 8.9% boost.

The sports betting segment exhibited the most significant growth during this quarter. Within the three-month period, GGR reached €133.3 million, showcasing a remarkable 118.9% increase from the previous year.

Pre-event sports betGGR was 1.8% higher than in Q2, and live betting GGR also saw a 3.5% increase. Horse racing bets saw a notable jump of 22.7%, although GGR from other sports bets experienced a 15.1% decline.

PokerGGR stood at €25.8 million, which was 27.6% higher than the previous year, but 5.8% lower than Q1. Tournament poker GGR saw a substantial 38.1% increase from Q2 2022, and cash poker GGR also saw a modest rise of 4.9%.

Bingo GGR amounted to €3.5 million, reflecting a 5.5% increase from the previous year and a similar 5.5% rise from Q2 this year.

Contests GGR reached €140,000, indicating an impressive 1,464.9% increase from the previous year, although it was 41.5% lower than Q2.

Player Deposits

Player deposits saw an almost 20% increase compared to the previous year. However, they were 2.0% lower than in Q1. Withdrawals were 3.0% higher than in 2022 but 2.3% lower than the first quarter.

In terms of related activities, the DGOJ reported that the total marketing spent by licensees in Spain reached €96.6 million, showing a 3.0% “annual increase. Advertising spending was up by 7.7% from the previous year, while affiliate spending soared by 56.2%, and sponsorship skyrocketed by 225.2%. However, promotions experienced a 1.7% decrease.

The monthly average of active gaming accounts increased by 11.4% from the previous year, totaling 1,134,993. However, the monthly average for new accounts fell by 3.0% to 102,804 users.

Additionally, the DGOJ provided an updated overview of the number of active licensees in the Spanish market. During Q2, a total of 78 licensees offered various forms of gambling. Among these operators, 43 offered sports betting, 50 offered casinos, nine offered poker, three offered bingo, and two offered contests.
