How We Review Live Casinos

Below we provide you with the guidelines that detail exactly what we look at when reviewing live online casinos. We show you this not only to inform you about our process, but also because it is useful for you when independently assessing casinos yourself.

We want you to look at these metrics, so you can take this knowledge and use it in the future to determine for yourself whether a new casino is worth joining up and depositing at – or not.

How Casino Licences Differ

There are many licences available throughout the world for online casinos. Licences, and their respective authorities, mean you have independent assurance that everything at your chosen casino is above board and fair. You also have a third party to consult in case of any legitimate disputes that may arise. The best of these licences are the European duo of Malta and Great Britain. Behind them are licences from Gibraltar, Curacao and few others such as the Isle of Man. It is hard for us to fully recommend any casino without any kind of licence, although not having one does not necessarily mean any foul play. It just means you will have less options should you experience a problem.

Good Licence Example:

A top tier licenser will carry out regular audits of its client casinos and will have thoroughly examined many factors thereof before issuing a licence. If your chosen casino is licenced by the UKGC (United Kingdom Gambling Commission) for example, they will have had their finances and legal documentations looked over by industry experts before launch. In this way you can be sure they won’t go bust and be unable to pay out any winnings, and that their terms and conditions are fair.

Bad Licence Example:

A Curacao licence, for example, does not allow players with grievances to contact them directly for mitigation. A Curacao licence also only covers US dollar transactions, so any other currencies could (but not always) be subject to many charges and taxes on your transactions. In general terms, the harder and more costly a licence is to obtain – the more legitimate it is. We are not saying that Curacao licence holders are unsafe to play at – not at all. There are plenty of fast paying live dealer sites with a great reputation and game selection, who only hold this licence. Casinos with no licence should be mostly avoided, unless you have third party information that they are definitely trustworthy or have a special reason to gamble there and not somewhere else.

Our Take On Casino Banking

This is one of the most important factors of any online casino. Without an effective and varied banking system, it will be difficult for players to deposit or for your to receive your funds when you win – leading customers to go elsewhere. A wide range of currencies and payment options, as well as instant payments on e-wallets and free transactions, are the gold standard.

How Top Casinos Do Banking

Visa, MasterCard, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafeCards and Bank Transfers using Trustly are the standard list of methods that most sites should, or do have. On top of that, country specific methods such as Sofort, EntroPayz, EcoPayz and more are also nice. Internationally recognised e-wallet PayPal is another sign that a casino has made an effort with its banking. Lastly, more niche payment options such as bitcoin, cheque, Western Union or even cash payments at land based casinos, are sometimes available too. When it comes to fees – a casino in 2018 should really keep its banking system free if it wants to be up there with the best. A small fee for withdrawals may be acceptable, but when many casinos will offer everything free of charge, why would you? Instant, or up to 24 hours processing time maximum, withdrawals on e-wallets are also the standard nowadays.

What To Look Out for in Banking

A less than dilligent live casino may only have a few banking options, such as Visa & MasterCard, and may make you wait 1-7 days for any kind of withdrawal as well as hitting you with charges on top. One thing a lot of casinos do like to do, is have a lot of methods available for deposits and then let you use only 1 or 2 of them for withdrawals. This is something you should look out for, and we always call this out in our reviews when we see it. This can cause hassle down the line when you have to sign up to a new e-wallet or input new information just to get your withdrawal. Although not at all casinos, it is actually quite standard for customers to be required to withdraw using the same method they deposited with – so be wary of this should you return to a casino after a long absence, for example. If you make an e-wallet account specifically to use at a casino, make sure you keep the details safe and secure so you can always come back to it at a later date!

Customer Support

Fast and efficient customer support should also be a priority for any top tier online casino. This doesn’t always mean live chat or email support – a sufficiently broad and clear FAQ selection can actually solve many issues for most players without need for human contact. This is something we always highlight in our reviews as a transparent and expansive help section makes our job a lot easier, if nothing else!

Good Customer Support Practices

24/7 live chat should be standard at an online casino these days, with email support available for more complex and longer queries. Native speaking agents are also common for live casinos that target markets where English is not the first language. The best casinos though, will do a lot to ensure you never even have to use this feature. A comprehensive, transparent and well thought out Frequently Asked Questions section can do wonders, and many casinos know this.

Bad Customer Support Practices

If there is no live chat at a casino, you automatically know the standard of customer service is lower. It really doesn’t take much to provide this service in the current day and age. A small, or difficult to navigate, FAQ section can also ring alarm bells. Especially if banking limits, fees and options are not readily displayed – as this can indicate they have something to hide.

Live Dealer Game Providers

Ensuring a good selection of quality live casino tables from a range of developers is highly important to any casino. These two priorities, quality and quantity, can sometimes come into conflict however. There are only a few consistently top tier developers out there – so if your casino is looking to be different from the rest, they may have to take a chance on developers who aren’t as proven. The best casinos strike a good balance between the two and clearly put a lot of thought into their offerings.

Top Software Providers

Evolution Gaming, PlayTech, Lucky Streak, NetEnt, Ezugi, Extreme Live Gaming and Authentic Gaming are the top tier providers in live gaming. If your selected casino has none of these, they might not be all that great. Any games provided by these guys will be certified quality across all platforms and are guaranteed to be fair and above board. Of course, there are other providers who can offer quality games – but these few are the gold standard. Evolution Gaming in particular, offer a huge selection of titles just by themselves, as well as private customised tables for their top casino partners. However, the market dominance comes at a price for players. While you may know you’re getting premium quality, it can become boring to see the same Evolution Gaming or PlayTech games at almost every online live casino.

Mediocre Live Dealer Providers

Some developers (naming no names) have extremely clunky live casino setups, that lack the professional and smooth design of the top providers. They may also not be as heavily licenced and regulated. Lesser known developers also often fall behind when it comes to mobile compatibility and the general enthusiasm of their live dealers. As said before – if the casino you are about to join has none of the providers mentioned above, you might be better off finding another one. The only exception to this is if you are from the US. In that case your only live dealer option is Visionary iGaming. Even though we would not consider them top tier, their games are legitimate.

Private Live Dealer Casino Tables

Private tables are customised, branded live dealer tables hosted by casinos to give an extra kick to their live dealer selection. These can include exclusive offers, interactive features and exclusive high class croupiers. Private tables are a relatively new phenomenon in the online casino sector, so they have yet to be adopted everywhere. Where they are accessible however, they are well worth trying out. Especially for dedicated live casino players who have played Evolution’s or NetEnt’s standard offerings many times.

Top Tier Live Casinos With Private Tables

Private tables offer players exclusive promotions and offers, with the unique ambiance of your preferred casino venue. For example, at Leo Vegas, they have a dedicated section where only Leo Vegas players can play. These games are not only exclusive to their players, but usually also get specially created promotions for them. While most casinos will only have one or two private tables – the most we found so far was Unibet Live Casino with 25+ available.

No Private Tables

Many smaller casinos do not have private tables at all, so if you get used to playing them at one venue and then change where you play you may be disappointed. They’re also usually only provided by Evolution Gaming, although we have seen some other developers get involved too, namely PlayTech who have private tables for BGO and Ladbrokes Live Casino customers. In hindsight it is not a major disadvantage to not have private tables, but for some reason we feel that when playing at these the experience is just a bit better. It might be due to the smaller number of players at the tables or just the general feel of the live casino you signed up to.

Live Casino Bonus Deals & Promotions

Rewards, bonuses and promotions are obviously one of the most important things an online casino can offer.  They can range from truly excellent (high value with a low wagering requirement of say 25 or 30x) to the paltry (low value, high playthrough) or the uniquely interesting such as prize draws, golden tickets or special jackpot bonuses on exclusive live casino tables. Given that the house edge is generally low in live dealer games, most casinos won’t offer you as much as they do for slot machines. It’s quite rare to find a bonus that is tailored towards live casino players, but they do exist and we have found some of them for you.

Good Bonuses & Promotions

Codeta has one of the better offers for live casino players. You get a 100% match on your first deposit up to £/€300 and it carries a 35x wagering requirement with live dealer games contributing 25%. Note that you cannot deposit with Skrill or Neteller to get the bonus. Any casino with a wagering requirement of less than 35x and a higher than £/€50 on the welcome bonus is probably a good bet, but make sure you check the exact contribution %’s of live dealer games. Other attractive rewards include promotions that accrue points or competition entries as you play normally – everyone loves something for nothing! When it comes to promotions that we recommend – you know they will have little or no wagering required on prizes and be at top tier casinos like William Hill.

Bad Promos

Any casino that makes you play your bonus on only slots is probably not a great one for promotion hungry live casino players. This doesn’t mean that their casino is bad, just that they might focus on different kinds of players. For a wider range of possible ways to maximise your bonus money earning potential, 100% on table games is what you want. It’s either that or something like 25% with a pretty low wagering requirement. Honestly though, these bonuses are very rare. One of the few sites we have found to offer it is Leo Vegas.  For certain regions, including the UK, Canada and Germany, although it carries a 70x wager requirement, their contribution is set at 100% on all live games. Easy! Lastly, be wary of casinos that don’t make the bonus conditions clear – we know just how tiresome scrolling through pages of terms and conditions can be, and that’s not something casinos should make you do.

Betting Limits

The betting limits can vary wildly between casinos, so it’s always nice to check beforehand so you know that you can put money down no matter what your budget. They usually range between €/£0.10 (Evolution’s lowest bet, on Automatic Roulette) and €/£75,000 on NetEnt’s Roulette tables. These actual numbers can vary between casinos though, and some can go much higher.

Flexibility

A good example of this is Unibet Live Casino where they offer a VIP Unibet Blackjack with maximum bet per hand of €/£50,000. Yet, they also have live blackjack for as low as £1/€1 – this is what we mean when we mention flexibility in terms of betting limits. Their live casino is tailored to all player segments. Those that want to play for pennies, but also the highest of high rollers.

Low Limits & Shady Withdrawal Terms

Low limits are actually not a bad thing, as most people are not looking to play blackjack for £/€1k per hand or stake thousands on live roulette per spin. The problems start to arise when some small white label casinos lift their limits way beyond what they can afford in terms of risk management. Some of these sites will let you wager £/€10k per hand on blackjack or baccarat, but deep in their withdrawal terms and conditions you will find that their monthly withdrawal limit is actually £/€5k. They basically run a no risk operation here – if you lose, they get to keep it all. If you win big, they will take years to pay you and according to their terms there is not much you can do about it. The above is why we only work with reputable and large operators, but also make sure to point out the exact weekly and monthly withdrawal limits each of our reviewed live casinos have.

Native Live Dealer Tables

Native tables are live dealer casino tables tailored to a specific national audience, with live croupiers or dealers speaking that language. They can help you feel right at home in a live casino setting and can increase player engagement with the host. Mostly they are only available for roulette, however, and you’ll usually find these provided by Evolution Gaming. A few other providers, most notably Ezugi, have taken up these options too giving players the chance to play Blackjack with Spanish or Turkish live dealers. There are also many Asian focused operators out there, who will offer Chinese & other Asian language live dealers. These are a rarity at European focused sites, however.

Where To Find Native Live Dealer Tables

Evolution Gaming offers a strong selection for those casinos who want them, with live roulette tables covering a variety of languages including Greek, Flemish, Swedish, Danish, Turkish, Russian, German & more. Many live casinos will take only one or two of these titles, so if you find any more than that you’re probably onto a good site. Leo Vegas and Party Live Casino both have all of the above.

No Native Tables

Some live casinos will offer no native tables at all, usually because they are not focused on non English speaking markets. If you are comfortable speaking English however, this shouldn’t be a problem for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of the biggest live casino game developers are audited and licenced by the same gambling authorities that do casinos, such as the Gibraltar or UK Gambling Commissions. They are also independently covered by other agencies, such as eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) who test games by major developers to ensure their RNG (random number generators) are fair and that the live dealers are always scrupulous and above board. If you stick to reputable casinos and developers, you’ll have no problems with live casino games.

Almost all live casino sites you find will also offer standard casino games and slots – even the live dealer focused sites. So if you’re a fan of the old one armed bandits, you’ll definitely still be able to play them even at a top live casino.

Mr Green and Leo Vegas both have very strong native iPhone apps.

Mr Green’s native iPhone app was voted 2016 Casino App of the year by the International Gaming Awards and is also available for Android, via their website. Users can log in using Apple’s Apple Touch iD for a convenient and easy way to get started. 50+ live dealer games are available and the app was designed from the ground up for mobile play.

Leo Vegas’ meanwhile, won “Best Native App” at the EGR Marketing and Innovation Awards 2017 and is also top quality with smooth menu design and efficient use of screen space to create an immersive experience. 80+ live dealer games are available here, including 50 tables of roulette alone.

Also worth a shout out are Betfair and William Hill, who both come with solid mobile offerings.

MYB Casino, VietBet and 5Dimes are the only casinos we looked at that allow US players. The latter two of these both operate out of Costa Rica, with 5Dimes in particular looking quite dated and offering only a small selection of live games. Their main business is sports-book however, so that is understandable.

Due to restrictive laws, none of the bigger and more reputable online casinos will allow US players to play at the present time. This makes it hard to find any that accept US players, let alone Evolution games. Although – with a few states legalizing online gambling, we expect this to change rapidly. Currently there are 100% legal options only in New Jersey where we work together with Betfair NJ.

There are several other live dealer casinos that do accept players from the US though. These all offer live dealer games from Visionary iGaming and include MYB Casino, 5Dimes and Vietbet.

Yes, there are a few offshore casinos that let you gamble in bitcoin – the most anonymous method of transferring money online. These are: 5dimes, CloudBet and, to an extent, VietBet. However, due to the nature of these casinos they are mostly unlicensed, so users be wary. Having that said, the three we have mentioned have excellent reputations in the industry and among the community.
