Ontario’s online gambling sector posted impressive results in June, with total revenue reaching CA$307 million (US$226 million), a significant 27.9% increase from the previous year. While this marked growth compared to June 2024, it did represent a slight drop from May 2025’s record-setting performance of CA$338 million. Despite the month-on-month decline, the overall trend points to continued strong growth for the province’s iGaming market.

Online casinos were the dominant revenue drivers in June, accounting for CA$243 million of the total revenue, a 41% increase compared to the same month last year. However, online sports betting saw a dip in its earnings, falling 7.9% year-on-year to CA$58 million. Internet poker experienced positive growth, climbing 12.5% to CA$5.4 million during the same period.

Increased Player Spending and Participation

June also saw a substantial rise in player spending. Ontarians wagered a total of CA$7.26 billion in June, up 21.4% compared to the previous year. Though it was a 10% drop from the CA$8.07 billion wagered in May, the June figure still represents a strong showing, with Ontario continuing to see high levels of gambling activity.

Breaking down the wagers by category, online casino bets increased by 25.2% to CA$6.36 billion, marking a solid performance for the sector. Internet sports betting, however, held steady at CA$768 million for the month, and online poker wagers remained constant at CA$132 million.

Active user numbers also saw an increase, with iGaming Ontario reporting 1 million active gambling accounts in June. This marks a 20.9% increase from last year, though the figure is 5.2% lower than the number of active accounts in May 2025. The average revenue per active player also grew by 5.9%, reaching CA$303, though this figure was slightly down by 4.1% from May’s CA$316.

Milestone Reached as Ontario’s iGaming Market Continues to Grow

Ontario’s iGaming market reached a significant milestone in June, surpassing CA$200 billion in total lifetime wagers. This achievement underscores the ongoing success and expansion of the province’s regulated iGaming industry, which has seen consistent monthly wagers above CA$7 billion since September 2024.

The revenue generated by online casinos in June, which totaled CA$243 million, accounted for nearly 80% of the province’s iGaming gross revenue. Despite the slower summer months, particularly for sports betting, Ontario’s gambling landscape remains resilient.

Ontario iGaming Landscape and Regional Expansion

Ontario’s iGaming sector continues to be a leader in Canada, with 84 iGaming websites operated by 49 licensed operators. This contrasts with other provinces like British Columbia, Manitoba, and Quebec, which only offer government-run platforms. Ontario’s open market, which began in 2022, has attracted a wide array of private operators, significantly boosting competition and revenue potential.

Looking forward, Alberta is planning to expand its iGaming sector with “Phase 2,” a development process that will involve consultations throughout the summer and fall of 2025. This suggests that Ontario’s success could serve as a model for other provinces exploring the potential of legalized online gambling.
