Alberta’s regulated online gaming framework has opened with Playtech among the suppliers serving licensed operator partners from the market’s first day.

The company’s arrival places its casino and live gaming portfolio within a market operating under the iGaming Alberta Act and AGLC’s iGaming Standards. Playtech has also welcomed the province’s approach to player protection, highlighting the introduction of a centralised self-exclusion system as part of the regulatory structure.

Alongside its comments on regulation, Playtech has started providing operators with a selection of games already used across regulated North American jurisdictions. The available content includes Adventures Beyond Wonderland, Mega Fire Blaze™ Roulette and Oink Oink Oink™.

Alberta represents a further expansion of Playtech’s activities in Canada after the company entered Ontario when that province launched its regulated iGaming market in 2022.

Player Safeguards Feature in Alberta Market Framework

The regulatory environment forms a significant part of Playtech’s assessment of its latest Canadian market entry.

Alberta has established its online gaming structure through the iGaming Alberta Act, with AGLC’s iGaming Standards also supporting the framework under which the sector operates.

Playtech specifically welcomed the use of a centralised self-exclusion system. The company views player protection measures as an important component of regulated online gaming and plans to continue engaging with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and other industry participants as the market develops.

Charmaine Hogan, Global Head of Government Relations at Playtech, added: “Alberta has set a strong regulatory foundation for its iGaming market, and the establishment of a centralised self-exclusion system is a particularly welcome step in safeguarding players. Well-designed regulation, underpinned by meaningful player protection tools, is what allows regulated markets to thrive and channel players away from the black market. We will continue to work constructively with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and industry partners as the market matures.”

The company’s involvement begins at the same time as Alberta’s regulated sector opens, allowing Playtech to establish relationships with licensed operator partners from the outset.

Its plans include continued cooperation with industry participants while the provincial market develops under the new framework.

Operators Gain Access to Playtech Casino and Live Games

Playtech’s commercial launch in Alberta brings a selection of its casino and live products to licensed operators in the province.

The company has chosen titles that have already recorded strong player engagement in other regulated North American markets. Adventures Beyond Wonderland forms part of the portfolio, together with Mega Fire Blaze™ Roulette and Oink Oink Oink™.

Playtech intends to develop its offering alongside its operator partnerships rather than keep the initial selection unchanged. As Alberta’s market evolves, the supplier plans to broaden the range of content available and continue supporting its partners.

The company is drawing on experience gained through its work with operators in established jurisdictions as it begins operating in Alberta.

Shimon Akad, Playtech Chief Operating Officer, stated: “Entering Alberta’s regulated iGaming market on its first day is a significant milestone for Playtech’s North American expansion strategy. We are pleased to be supporting our partners with some of our strongest-performing content and are committed to working closely with them as the market evolves, broadening our offering and helping them deliver engaging player experiences to support their long-term success.”

The launch therefore combines immediate access to existing Playtech content with plans for a wider offering as the regulated sector progresses.

Alberta Follows Playtech’s Earlier Ontario Entry

The latest launch extends Playtech’s presence in Canada beyond the position it established in Ontario four years earlier.

When Ontario opened its regulated iGaming market in 2022, Playtech also entered from the first day. Alberta now becomes another Canadian jurisdiction where the company has participated from the beginning of a regulated market opening.

Its Alberta activities build on that existing Canadian presence while contributing to Playtech’s broader North American expansion strategy.

The company enters the province with licensed operator partnerships already in place and a portfolio of casino and live games available for distribution. Its initial selection relies on products with previous engagement in regulated North American markets, while its longer-term plans involve expanding that offering as Alberta’s sector matures.

Playtech also expects its role in the province to include continued engagement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and industry partners. Its comments around the launch place both operator support and the regulatory framework at the center of its plans for the market.

With Alberta now open to regulated online gaming, Playtech has added another Canadian market to its operations while following the day-one entry approach it previously used in Ontario. The company begins with established gaming content and plans to expand its offering in step with the development of Alberta’s regulated sector.
